We pull real conversations with real women figuring out How to CEO everyday.
This week…
Challenge: We have someone on our team that no one wants around and I feel stuck because she makes me money. What should I do?
Coach Response: When you are in a stuck space and keep people who don’t suit your values, culture and vibe, it affects the whole business. That alone can keep you from finding great talent. It’s more energetic than anything else. It’s not that you aren’t great and your business isn’t great. If you have people that are repelling her, that energy is in your company. Sometimes these really hard decisions and options we are presented with are part of the process we have to go through to create space, physically and energetically. I see it happen alot. Anytime we keep someone because we believe them leaving will injure the business, we are wrong. That has been my personal experience repeatedly. Even the last time we let someone go, I thought it would crush us and it didn’t.
Even so, you have to make a decision. You could have a conversation with her that is honest, saying you aren’t comfortable not including her or her not being involved with the organization as a whole, but at the same time, acknowledging that there are some real interpersonal issues going on.
It’s only necessary to talk to her about the issues on the team if you want to try and work it out and have her stay. If you are just going to let her go, it’s my philosophy that no one cares. I think you just have to look at the writing on the wall. It’s just not a good fit for your business or you.
The bigger your business gets, the more people like this will stumble in or maybe turn into this after working for you a while. Protect yourself but don’t make it mean more than it is.
